Essay / Presentation

Thierry Bernard-Gotteland draws on the mythologies of heavy metal music and culture to create works that foreground the power of darker narratives in which social roles, cultural models and moral values are unflinchingly examined. A prolific sound and performance artist, Bernard-Gotteland employs materials such as text, black duct tape, viscous black enamel, and stage equipment in his works, which lend the sense of a live concert or private fantasy, each equally sensual and forbidden.

Bernard-Gotteland was born in 1974 in Chambéry, France. After receiving his Bachelor of Graphic Design, he graduated with an MFA from the School of Fine Art in Grenoble and a Post-Master Diploma at Le Fresnoy, National Studio of Contemporary Art in Tourcoing where he worked with acclaimed artist Antoni Muntadas. Bernard-Gotteland has exhibited in North America, Europe and Asia, where he now resides.

Recent regional exhibitions include ‘A Physical Obedience of A Certain Geometry [Nihil Sublime], Galerie Quynh, Ho Chi Minh City (2011); ‘To Ho Chi Minh City with Love: A Social Sculpture’, a project by Phong Bui, Sàn Art, Ho Chi Minh City (2011); ‘Mise-en-scene’, Galerie Quynh (2011); and the sound performance ‘Untitled [DelayedDustScreens]’ at The Cage, labo Wonderful, Ho Chi Minh City. Bernard-Gotteland is also a lecturer in the design department at RMIT University in Ho Chi Minh City.
